About EcoSmart Choice

Program Basics

EcoSmart Choice is AMP's green pricing program, which allows customers of participating member electric systems to support renewable energy development. The program is available to both residential and commercial / industrial customers.

Green pricing programs such as EcoSmart Choice are based on the purchase and retirement of renewable energy certificates (RECs). The REC is equivalent to the "greenness" of the electricity that is generated. Essentially, for each megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity that is generated from renewable resources, one REC is created. For each REC that is purchased and used by the electric utility for the green pricing program, one MWh of traditional (non-renewable) electric generation is offset. Once RECs are used for this purpose, they are essentially retired. The buying and selling of RECs through green pricing programs such as EcoSmart Choice enables electric utilities to deliver the benefits of renewable energy to more customers, regardless of their power supply mix.

To the maximum extent practical, RECs used by AMP for EcoSmart Choice are Green-e® certified by the Center for Resource Solutions and/or are RECs generated within AMP member states. They are currently sourced from hydroelectric, landfill gas, biomass or wind facilities.

Customer Sign-up

To sign up online click here for a list of participating municipal electric systems. Because AMP is primarily a wholesale provider, we are not able to offer EcoSmart Choice directly to customers – you must sign up for the program through your local utility.

EcoSmart Choice pricing and participation options will be confirmed with your local utility provider prior to commencement of this service. You will not have electricity from a specific generation facility delivered directly to your home or business. Your purchase causes renewable energy equal to your electricity purchases to be delivered to regional power grids.
